Learn to Lilt in Ireland for High Novelty Performances
Lilting is one of the terms used in Ireland for a musical style known as
vocalisation. It is found in many musical cultures throughout the world.
It is related to sean-nós singing but may have originally been a
substitution for an instrument.
Lilting is identified in four main forms:
1. A memory aid for musicians.
2. To supply music for dancing.
3. A novelty item.
4. A refined recital form.
Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Eireann has a special Competition category for it in its
annual fleadhanna.
Classes are now available all year round with Helen McLoughlin who also
teaches the bodhrán.

Áras Éanna - Inis Oírr's Contemporary Arts and Heritage Centre
Áras Éanna is Europe's most westerly arts centre. It is located
on the
beautiful island of Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands.
The
centre which serves both Inis Oírr and the wider community runs a series
of
week-long adult education courses. These include courses in the Irish
language, history and archaeology of the Aran Islands, music and celtic
spirituality.
The language courses are designed for people who have little or no spoken
Irish through to those who have the fluency of a native speaker, and they
come in modules of Basic,19-23 August , Intermediate, 8-12 July, 12-16
August and Advanced, 8-12 July, 5-9 August.
All of Áras Éanna's courses concentrate on teaching the spoken language:
phrases and sentences rather than words and grammar. Interaction between
students is important and activities reflect this with an emphasis on
acting, role-playing and games, all reinforcing typical day to day
activities.
Morning sessions begin at 10.00 a.m. and end at 12.45 p.m. and are mainly
based in the modern classrooms of Áras Éanna. The afternoon begins at
2.00
p.m. and continues until 4.30 p.m. In general, activities outside the
centre take place in the afternoon. These include day trips to Inis Meáin,
tours of the island and visits to sites of interest.
The History and Archaeology of the Aran Islands (15-17 July) introduces
participants to the historical and archaeoleogical sites of Inis Oírr and
Inis Meáin and like the Irish language courses, uses a combination of
lectures, discussion, slide shows and field trips. This module is taught
bilingually so that some knowledge of Irish is advisable.
The International Bodhrán School, (1-5 July) first run in July 2001, is
taught by the world's most renowned bodhrán players and is a week of musical
magic.
Spiorad (22-26 July) is a week of lectures and workshops focusing on Celtic
spirituality.
Áras Éanna is a well-equipped centre with theatre/cinema, craft workshops,
classrooms and studios, hosting artists who wish to live in Inis Oírr for
periods of up to six months. A gallery frequently mounts exhibitions of
work produced on the island.

HERITAGE CENTRES:
Re-Opening of Exhibition at Tullamore Dew
The newly refurbished exhibition at Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre is now
open.
A 6mn audio visual presentation, in three languages, has been introduced and
added along with a series of short videos and more interactives. It
is
divided into two parts.
The first floor concentrates on the story of Tullamore Dew Whiskey and the
work that used to take place in the Distillery. Visitors can interact
with
the artefacts by shovelling the barley or using the old plough. In the
Irish Mist Liqueur section, a community of 70,000 live bees can be admired
collecting nectar for their queen. Since its launch in 1948, Irish Mist
Liqueur has been a story of intensive marketing and those marketing ideas
are finally disclosed and displayed.
The second floor relates the story of the development of Tullamore. The
journey starts 9,000 years ago with the formation of the bog. Visitors
can
learn about raised bogs and see the different uses of peat.
Visitors will also step into the shoes of the merchant class of the 19th
century and try on costumes.
There is a new large aquarium containing flora and fauna of the canal along
with other items
which are present in canals nowadays but shouldn't be there!
The tour ends with a complimentary glass of Tullamore Dew Whiskey or Irish
Mist. The Heritage Centre is open seven days a week.
